Assignment #2
Junot Diaz's gloomy fictional novel, The brief wondrous life of Oscar Wao ,describes the demise of Oscar life by showing his struggles with love ,and living an atypical life.
Oscar's personality and unique features made him stand out from his Dominican community in the fact that he is not your typical Dominican. The narrator states "What more sci-fi than Santo Domingo? What more fantasy than the Antilles?"(Diaz 6) This demonstrates Oscar's love for the genre fiction, and also how this interest intertwines with his real love life .in addition paralleling Dominican history with a variation of science fiction and fantasy. Despite the negative affect his nerdy ways dealt , Oscar used it as a gate way to a happier place . Yunior states "what is clear is that being a reader/fan boy (for lack of a better term )helped him get through the rough days of his youth "(Diaz 23) this reveals that Oscar's defect is not something that can easily be fixed . Oscar entering this ''fan boy'' state was also his normal being , making it seem rather impossible for him to attain this love he for so long seeks. Oscar later on falls in love with a girl name Ybon which later turns out do be deadly yet heroic move for Oscar. the narrator state "he told them that it was only because of her love that he'd been able to do the things that had been done"(Diaz 321) Oscar is capture by the Captain's friends and brought to the cane fields .the reader can understand Oscars determination for Ybons love in a stronger light .Oscar referred him self as a hero for being fear less when it came to love, even when having do face fatal circumstances.
The mas affect love has on humans is great enough to make one reach for unbelievable lengths. Diaz's novel achieves this through out his story by demonstrating Oscar's will to attain his one real goal ,and despite showing his demise in the proses he still comes out on top.
